IPA 2017 Honorable Mention

The annual IPA photography contest is something which I look forward to annually to submit some of my work for the year which I personally like, to ascertain if they can hold their own within a field of international entries from other capable and talented photographers around the world. For IPA 2017, I submitted less entries than previous two years as I have been shooting less through the year due to work commitments. It is also the first time I had a go at the ‘series’ category and am happy to receive an honorable mention for it. I am pleased with the outcome and to share it with you here on my ongoing photography journey.

Under the ‘Event/Traditions & Cultures’ category – ‘A Final Prayer To Goddess Durga’

In Hinduism, Goddess Durga is the mother of the universe, the power behind the creation, preservation and destruction of the world. The protector from the evils of the world, Goddess Durga is portrayed as carrying weapons in her many arms and riding a lion. Durga Puja is a celebration of the Mother Goddess victory of good over evil, one of the most important festivals of India. The nine day celebrations include rituals to ward one of impurities, vices and defects, adoring Goddess Durga as the giver of spiritual wealth and the goddess of wisdom. Devotees offer a final prayer in earnest to Goddess Durga on the last day of the celebrations to bestow on them spirituality, wealth, auspiciousness, prosperity, strength, knowledge, etc. before she returns back to the heavens. Apart from being a religious festival, it is also an occasion for reunion and rejuvenation among family and friends.

The set was shot in October 2016 on the last day of the Durga Puja in Mumbai. I remember that night well at Juhu Beach, it was packed and bustling with activities as devotees/celebrants went about their prayers, amid a spiritual and divine calmness, and colourful vibrant atmosphere. I have not seen anything like it before and every moment was new and an experience indeed! Some were curious and happy to see me there taking an interest in the proceedings and photographing, some made me feel welcome, we chatted, got acquainted, and I even got to try some of the ceremonial food they offered for good luck. There were requests for some photos, which I was only happy to reciprocate and sent them later. All in, I was there for a good 5-6 hours and took quite a number of photos; out of these, I picked the above five for my entry which I feel captures the essence and emotion of how families, relatives, friends and communities from near and far come together to offer their final prayer to goddess Durga Puja in different settings and scale, all with a common purpose and pure adoration for their mother goddess. Hope you like the photos … they were taken as is, handheld, none were posed.

IPA 2016 Honorable Mention

My, how time flies … it’s almost a year to the day when I posted in this blog my participation in the IPA 2015 photography competition. For the 2016 edition, encouraged and enthused by the result from my first attempt, I decided to have a go at it again, my main objective to ascertain if my photography have some consistency and relevance in them and 2015 was no fluke. It was a difficult and challenging task to decide on the final entries to submit. Firstly, I only had sufficient funds for a limited number of entries; and secondly, I found it hard to keep my experience and emotion in check while selecting the entries, to remain impartial and critical of something which you have worked on and have a certain attachment to is always tricky, in my opinion. In the end I decided on submitting 6 entries under the ‘people’, ‘culture’, ‘portrait’ and ‘nature’ categories. And last night, I received news about the results, no big awards (unfortunately ;)) but an improvement with 3 honorable mentions this time round, I am pleased with the outcome, and am happy to share this news and achievement with you on my ongoing photography journey. Hope you like the photos …

IPA 2015 Honorable Mention

The last time I participated in photography competitions was way back in my secondary school days when I submitted entries for the school’s annual photography competition. Since I rediscovered photography, I have not given participation in competition much thought as I am of the opinion we all are uniquely different and creative in the way we see, perceive and represent the world, and as such, no right or wrong, nor a good or bad photograph.

But seeing so much beautiful photography being created and published by fellow photographers from all over the world, I do wonder and ask myself at times how does my photography, my work, compare with what’s out there? and after reading Ivan Johsua Loh’s post on participating in photography competitions … http://ivanjoshualoh.com/2015/06/25/awards-with-fujifilm-x-t1/, I decided to give it a try. I researched the competitions Ivan mentioned and decided on The International Photography Awards (IPA) competition as it’s international, well known and established within the industry, well participated, easy on the image copyright rights and with many categories which one can choose to participate in.

I had a number of images in mind, my personal favorites, so to speak, and I submitted them under the ‘Non-Professional’ category. Submission fee per entry is rather steep (in my opinion) at USD15 per single shot entry. Closing date was 14th August. I left it at that after the submission. Yesterday, having not heard from IPA at all since the closing date, I visited the IPA Facebook page to see if there’s news and to my surprise found out results were already announced on the 29th Sept. On browsing through the winning entries, I found two of my entries awarded for Honorable Mention under the ‘non-professional’ category. I am really pleased and happy to share this news and achievement with you all. The IPA 2015 competition ‘Non-Professional’ category attracted 17,839 submissions from over 153 countries.
