Clusters Of Golden Shower Tree Flowers and Fruit Pods

The above flowering golden shower tree caught my attention one day in one of my neighbourhood walkabout. As it’s quite a mature tree, it must have been planted a number of years back. Why didn’t I notice this tree when it bloomed in previous years as it is located close to a busy road junction which I traverse almost on a daily basis, I do ask myself. Perhaps its flowering this year is exceptionally intense that I could not help but notice its thick golden yellow blooms. Well, I am glad I did this year as the blooms are simply beautiful and their golden yellow colour exceptionally breathtaking.

The golden shower tree (cassia fistula) is a flowering plant in the family Fabaceae. It is native to the Indian subcontinent and adjacent regions of Southeast Asia, it ranges from southern Pakistan eastward throughout India to Myanmar, Thailand and south to Sri Lanka. A medium-sized tree widely grown as an ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical areas,  it grows at a fast rate to 10–20 m in height and blooms in late spring. Flowering is profuse, with trees covered with yellow flowers, many times with almost no leaf being seen. The flowers are produced in pendulous racemes 20–40 cm long, each flower 4–7 cm diameter with five yellow petals of equal size and shape. The fruit is a legume, 30–60 cm long and 1.5–2.5 cm broad, with a pungent odour and containing several seeds. The golden shower tree is the national flower of Thailand; its yellow flowers symbolize Thai royalty. It is also the state flower of Kerala in India where the flowers are of ritual importance in the Vishu festival.
